Depends on what province you’re looking at. Alcohol is a provincial thing.

Mandy asks…
how long has the drinking age in canada been 18 or 19?
how long has the drinking age in canada been 19? was it ever more than 19?

eric answers:
In Ontario, it was 21 until it was lowered to 18 in 1971.
I think (but not positive) that it was Canada wide at 21 until 1971. I believe that serving military members were allowed to drink at their messes under 21.
It was raised to 19 in January of 1979 in Ontario, but people who were 18 could get an age of majority card if they applied by December 31st 1978 and continue to drink.
Drinking ages vary depending on province now.

Ruth asks…
what is the legal drinking age in canada for americans?
a couple friends and i will be heading up to Niagra falls next summer, and I know that in canada the age is either 18 or 19 depending on where you are. But i also heard that if you are American they still won’t sell you alcohol if you are under 21. is this true or not? Its not going to stop us from going to niagra falls, but it would be cool if we could drink while we were there.

eric answers:
America probably wishes it’s laws prevailed when an American is in a different country. But they don’t. You always follow the rules of the country you are in. In Ontario, anyone who is 19 years old or older can purchase/carry/drink alcohol

Joseph asks…
whats the drinking age in Canada?
and are you allowed to drink on the streets? what rule should i know about drinking in canada?

eric answers:
Drinking age is set federally at 18. However, in Ontario, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Nunavut, the provincial laws set the legal drinking age at 19. Laws from drinking within your home also vary greatly. For example, in BC minors of any age may drink if supervised by their parents.
In all provinces it is illegal to consume alcohol in a public space. That includes the streets. Enforcement varies.
Obviously lots of laws regarding alcohol. Pubs can refuse entry to minors, drinking and driving laws, having an open alcohol container in a car is typically an offense, supplying alcohol to a minor, etc.

Betty asks…
Why is the drinking age in Canada 18, but the age to buy tobacco products 19?
I know the ages in the US are different as well (21 and 18 respectively) but is there a reason that one needs to be older to smoke or at least purchase cig. in Canada?

eric answers:
The age of majority varies from province to province. In BC, the drinking and smoking age is 19, while Alberta it is 18.
One of the main reasons for the drinking age in the US being 21 while smoking 18 is because of the overly high number of drinking and driving offences committed by younger drivers. Another reason it could be different is the timing of the age limits. The age limits for tobacco are relatively recent as compared to the alcohol limits, and the perception for when one is old enough to make an informed decision could have changed over time.
